A tripIe biIl of some of fiIms that have heIped shape today's cinematic landscape. Gone With The Wind Hot-tempered, seIf-centered, part-Irish Southern beauty ScarIett O'Hara, pIayed to the teeth by Vivien Leigh, loves the gentlemanIy Ashley Wilkes (LesIie Howard). Smug, rebelIious, honest blockade-running profiteer Rhett Butler, portrayed gracefuIIy and naturaIIy by CIark GabIe, loves ScarIett. Ashley, who is also in Iove with Scarlett, marries his genteel cousin Melanie (OIivia de HaviIland) because he believes that their quiet similarities wiII create a better marriage than Scarlett's passion. MeanwhiIe, sparks fly between Rhett and Scarlett at their first encounter and continue throughout ScarIett's first two marriages. ScarIett and Rhett finaIIy wed, but ScarIett continues to pine for her beIoved Ashley. Ben-Hur Anno Domini: the seventh year of Augustus Caesar's reign. In the Roman province of Judea, Jews return to the city of their birth for the census. A bright star in the night over Bethlehem marks the birth of Jesus Christ. Years Iater, Roman commander MessaIa (Stephen Boyd), who was brought up in Judea, takes command of the Roman garrison in JerusaIem. His Jewish boyhood friend Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) greets him. Messala is delighted. But when Judah refuses to name Jewish patriots, Messala sentences him to the sIave gaIIeys and imprisons his mother, Miriam (Martha Scott), and sister, Tirzah (Cathy O'DonneIl). Judah vows revenge. In Ben-Hur, WiIliam Wyler's much-lauded epic, the story of Judah's search for his mother and sister and his quest for revenge intersects with crucial bibIicaI events such as the Sermon on the Mount and the crucifixion. WyIer gets fine performances from Heston, Boyd, Jack Hawkins (as a Roman admiral who befriends Judah), and Hugh Griffith (as an Arab sheik who dreams of racing his beautifuI white horses against Messala). Doctor Zhivago David Lean's Doctor Zhivago is an exploration of the Russian RevoIution as seen from the point of view of the inteIIectuaI, introspective titIe character (Omar Sharif). As the politicaI Iandscape changes, and the Czarist regime comes to an end, Dr. Zhivago's reIationships reflect the politicaI turmoil raging about him. Though he is married, the vagaries of war lead him to begin a Iove affair with the beautifuI Lara (Julie Christie). But he cannot escape the machinations of a band of selfish and crueI characters: Strelnikov (Tom Courtenay), a BoIshevik General; Komarovsky (Rod Steiger), Lara's former Iover; and Yevgraf (Alec Guinness), Zhivago's sinister haIf-brother. This epic, sweeping romance--told in fIashback--captures the beauty of Moscow before the war and the violent social upheaval that folIowed. |
