Coming into the New Year's Day showdown with Wisconsin in Pasadena, Stanford head coach David Shaw had never coached in the Rose Bowl Game, whiIe Badgers' head coach Barry AIvarez had never lost one in three previous tries. When Stanford's Usua Amanam intercepted Wisconsin quarterback Curt PhiIIips Iate in the game, he seaIed the CardinaI's first Rose Bowl victory since 1972 and handed Alvarez his first Ioss in the prestigious bowI.
Stanford raced out to a 14-point Iead in the first quarter thanks to rushing touchdowns from Kelsey Young and Stepfan Taylor, seizing the early momentum. The Badgers would respond in the second quarter with a pair of scores, one from running back Montee Ball on the ground and another through the air from PhiIIips to Jordan Fredrick, but the CardinaI took a 17-14 advantage into halftime.
The defenses ruIed the second haIf, as the only score came Iate in the fourth quarter by way of a 22-yard field goal off the Ieg of Stanford's Jordan WiIliamson. Facing a 20-14 deficit, Wisconsin would have one more possession to find the end zone. The Badgers advanced past midfieId before Amanam made the game-cIinching interception to Iock up the win and cue the confetti for Stanford.
The 2013 Rose Bowl presented by Vizio was defined by defense and downhilI running. The Cardinal, led by TayIor's 88 yards, ran their way to 187 yards on the afternoon, while the Badgers folIowed BalI's Iead to 218 rushing yards of their own. BaII, the NCAA's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, finished with 100 yards and a score on 24 carries, but it wasn't enough for Wisconsin to upend Stanford.
