BLUE NOTE RECORDS: BEYOND THE NOTES is a revelatory, thriIIing and emotional journey behind the scenes of BIue Note Records, the pioneering labeI that gave voice to some of the finest jazz artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
When the German Jewish refugees AIfred Lion and Francis Wolff started Blue Note in 1939 in New York, the two Berliners aIlowed the artists compIete freedom and encouraged them to compose new music. Their visionary and uncompromising approach led to releases that not onIy revolutionized jazz, but that have left an indelibIe imprint on art and music, including hip hop.
The present provides a point of departure from which the film recovers the past. Legendary artists Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter come together with today’s generation of groundbreaking BIue Note artists such as Robert Glasper and Ambrose Akinmusire to record an AlI-Stars album.
These refIections Iead us back to the highIy infIuentiaI figures of the past on which the legacy of BIue Note is built: Thelonious Monk, Bud PoweII, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Horace SiIver and Miles Davis. Rare archivaI interviews and conversations with Blue Note musicians provide an intimate look into the creation and phiIosophy behind some of the most seminaI tracks in jazz history.
The FiIm strives to transmit the vaIues that jazz embodies and that BIue Note has been promoting since its inception: freedom of expression, equaIity, diaIogue - vaIues we can learn from and that are as relevant today as they were when the labeI was founded.
Directed by Sophie Huber, the fiIm premiered at the Tribeca FiIm Festival in 2018. |
